Reflection of working with the children

My group and I created an animation based on Article 15 'All children have the right to meet, make friends with, and join clubs with other children.' I found it very successful as the children were all engaged and seemed to enjoy the task they had been set. I felt that we were very lucky with the children in terms of behaviour as they were all patient in taking turns on the computer. Additionally, they were all contributing ideas in what we could do and how we could have improved it.

However, one of the main reasons I feel that it was successful was there were four adults in the group to six children. If I was the class teacher on my own with thirty children I would find it much more challenging to keep the class engaged and on task, especially with media such as animation as it can be very time consuming and requires a lot of patience from everyone involved. I look forward to hearing from Tom further techniques on how to have a successful and enjoyable session using technology such as animation.

  1. I agree that it would be much more difficult with a whole class, particularly if and when children encounter problems. However, if the children are shown how to use the equipment properly as they have been at Shirley Warren then hopefully this would mean they could resolve most of them themselves.
Is this the first time you have tried animation? How do you think it affected the way children got their message across to their audience?

  2. It was the first time I had used animation with children and I really enjoyed it. As ours was a silent animation, I found it required them to think more about how the characters were feeling and why. Additionaly, which music would suit the emotions of the characters and scene best. Also, the small movements required for animation allowed the children to focus on what the story was and what they were still trying to achieve. They worked really well as a team too by combining their ideas and sharing the roles.

  3. Although it is intimidating to use all of this technology to a whole class the children did seem to know what they were doing. I expect this is because they are continuously around it, however I think the children would be able to teach themselves and be part of the full process. They could plan and explore the equipment and think about how they can use it for which lessons and I think they could enhance learning in the simplest forms, even just a different form of writing.
